Living a Mundane Life?

"Light your life on fire. Seek those who fan your flames." - Rumi
Is your life a burning inferno of passion, excitement, love, possibilities, and adventures? Or is it a dim flicker of complacency, mediocracy, and mundane living? With day-in and day-out of routines like working 9-5, driving kids to school and activities, weekly groceries, home chores, and all of the other essential activities that must happen to live. Living on auto-pilot and continuing to "go through the motions" of life is not living. When we live a detached life for months, years, or decades, we become stuck — stuck in the mud of our mundane life. Without noticing, our mundane life sucks the life out of us, making us feel stuck, depressed, unmotived, board, and dull.
The Utah mountains were getting a massive snowstorm, predicted to get 3 feet of snowfall overnight. I didn't care about the snow. I had to get out of my house. I felt like a trapped animal. I was frantic, anxious, and sobbing as I drove white-knuckled, on the canyon road. I was a housewife and mom of three, and I just couldn't clean one more dish, make one more dinner, do one more load of laundry. I was desperate to live, not just exist. I didn't know or care where I was going. I just wanted to feel, do, see, experience something different. My spirit had been smothered by the mundane life of motherhood. I was desperate to light the match that would bring light into my life again. Don't mistake me, I had three amazing children, a loving husband, living a middle-class life, but it wasn't enough. I needed more. I needed to feel the fire of passion, to grow and learn, to live more fully. To feel like I was living.
I saw hundreds of red brake lights ahead of me. The one road out of the canyon was closed! I pulled into a gas station off the freeway and cried even harder. I thought, "Oh my God, I really am trapped." I began scribbling my thoughts on the back of old junk mail. I realized I was stuck in the mud of my mundane life. To free myself of it, I needed to take action to do the things that fed my spirit and made me feel alive. My list contained, getting my yoga certificate, learning guitar, learning Spanish, go camping by myself to Yellow Stone, take time to read, hike once a week.
We crave growth, change, and new experiences in life. It's what living a full life is all about. We can either choose to live fully or only to exist. Our spirit needs to be feed and nurtured to grow and thrive. When we simply exist, eating, working, watching TV, and sleeping each day, our spirit dries up and wastes away. But, no one can feed your soul and live a full life for you.
You are 100% responsible for lighting your fire.
It is up to you to strike the match within.
Do you want a new job?
Do you want to go on a vacation?
Do you want to lose 20 lbs?
Do you want a better marriage?
Do you want to move out of the city onto a farm?
What do you want? Get real with yourself, what the hell do you want your life to look like? No more coasting on auto-pilot! The change will never happen unless you take action to make it happen. Light a fire under your ass and do something different.
I grew up in a small rural mountain town, with nothing to do in ways of entertainment. I have always been an adventure-minded person. Starting as early as 6-years-old every Saturday morning, I would pack peanut butter and jelly sandwich on my Wonder Bread, fill my circular, tin, camping water flask, and head up the mountain. "What's on the other side of the mountain?" I would think. I would be gone till dinner time, looking in caves, swimming in the creeks, exploring broken down 150-year-old, pioneer cabins (that were very dangerous and falling apart). The world became my playground.
The world is a massive playground. Get curious about life.
How bad do you want to change? How bad do you want to increase your income so that you aren't beholden to the lender? How bad do you want to lose 20 lbs so that you can hook up with the hot guy at the gym? How badly do you want to create an independent location job, so that you can tell your jerk boss to "go to H@#*!" and live on the warm beaches of Spain?
Stop waiting to LIVE, not just exist!
Take off that heavy backpack of limiting beliefs that are holding you back from living fully. These limiting beliefs do not serve you! They are excuses you buy into to justify no going after your dreams. Limiting beliefs are those negative ideas we convince ourselves to be accurate, ideas like:
I'm not capable of getting another job.
I'll always be broke.
I can't move because my kids are in school.
I'm not pretty enough to get the hot guy.
I can't travel to other countries, it's dangerous.
I'll never be able to lose weight.
Cut these loose! This way of thinking is holding you back.
How many more years will settle for living a life of mediocracy?
Make a choice TODAY to light your own match in the soul.
Light a fire in the heart and under your ass to make the changes you want in your life.
